About Nico & Bear
Nico & Bear is an independent jewellery studio based outside Gothenburg, Sweden, creating handmade silver and brass jewellery inspired by Scandinavian landscapes and the natural patterns found within stone.
The studio was founded by British jewellery designer and maker Nic Johansson. Working from a small studio in Västra Götaland, each piece is developed through a hands-on process of cutting, shaping and texturing metal, often combined with natural stones chosen for their unique character.
Many of the stones used — such as dendritic agate, jasper and chrysocolla — contain patterns that resemble landscapes, branches or flowing water. These natural formations play a central role in the design process, with each piece created to highlight the individuality of the material.
Alongside stone work, the studio explores organic forms and surface texture in metal. Hammer marks, subtle irregularities and sculptural shapes are intentionally preserved, allowing each piece to retain a sense of process and material.
All jewellery is produced in small batches or as one-of-a-kind pieces. Variations in texture, form and stone are part of the character of the work, ensuring that no two pieces are exactly the same.
The Studio
Each piece begins as a simple idea or sketch before being cut from metal sheet and worked by hand. Processes may include sawing, filing, forming, soldering and texturing, followed by finishing and polishing.
This hands-on approach allows the design to evolve during making, rather than being fully predetermined. The result is jewellery that feels organic, tactile and slightly unpredictable.
Materials
Nico & Bear jewellery is crafted using sterling silver, brass and natural stones. Materials are selected for their ability to develop character over time, with surfaces that respond to light, wear and touch.
Natural stones are chosen individually, with particular attention to pattern and tone. Many pieces are designed around a single stone, allowing its natural structure to guide the form of the jewellery.
One-of-a-Kind Pieces
Some pieces are created as unique works using natural stones whose patterns cannot be replicated. These pieces are part of an ongoing exploration of landscape, texture and form.
